Woodlands Neighborhood Walk

As part of our study of communities, our class went for a walk around the shopping center/hawker stalls here in Woodlands.  Prior to our little outing, we spent some time talking about the different people that work in our neighborhood.  Kids mentioned that we needed doctors, food, flowers to decorate our homes, clothes, pets and lots of other "things".  During our walk, we saw food stalls, banks, fish markets, nurseries, clinics, dentists, barber shops, and more.  Besides shopkeepers, our students saw taxi drivers, seamstresses, and construction workers fixing a new sidewalk.  It was hot, but we got to see so much!  It was a great field trip.

We would like to thank Mrs. Carrillo, Mrs. Park, Mrs. Kim, Mrs. Doffing, Mrs. Fredrick and Mrs. Van Beek for joining in the fun and making sure we were safe while crossing the streets and walking around the neighborhood.  Thanks!!!

Readers Build Good Habits Celebration

Hooray for the Super Readers!!  Today we celebrated the end of our unit on Readers Build Good Habits. On the first day of school, we could read to self for only about 3 minutes.  Now, after working on building our reading stamina, we are able to read quietly for 20 minutes.  It's amazing!!!  Here are some of the things we learned:

3 Ways to Read
  • Read the pictures
  • Read the words
  • Retell the story
When we READ to SELF we:
  • Sit at one spot
  • Read the whole time - QUIETLY
  • Build our stamina
When we READ to SOMEONE we:
  • Sit EEKK
  • Use soft voices
  • Read the whole time
When we LISTEN to READING we:
  • Listen quietly
  • Follow along with pictures and words
  • Take care of the materials

Big Cheers for the Super Authors

Today was our first Writing Celebration.  Our wonderful authors wrote a few pieces of writing.  As authors do, they added more to the pictures, they added more to the words and they stretched their stories into a few pages.  We spent some time talking about ideas and how we get them.  Most of our stories are personal narratives, something that happened to them.  Others shared about things they like and their pets.  Then we chose one piece to "fancy it up".  We went back and added more details to the pictures and words and added a cover with title and author.  Now it was time to SHARE our wonderful stories.  We invited Mr. Schunk and Ms. Jo to be our guests of honor and they were sooo impressed!  Wow, the stories were great.  We listened to each other carefully and made some nice compliments.  Then at the end, we toasted to our success and for being amazing authors.  We had hot chocolate and cookies!  Yum!!  What a great way to celebrate our writing!  Way to go, Authors!!

Wild Things Number Stories

Before our students are asked to practice number facts, we find it important that they experience addition and subtraction as real world operations that can be represented with words or number models. “Wild Things” is designed to help the kids develop these connections. As the students role-play, tell, write, share and solve number stories, they begin to learn the addition and subtraction language and symbols. The most important part is that they have tons of fun in the process. Hooray for the Wild Things!

Principal Read Aloud and Reading Buddies

On Friday, we had our first Principal Read Aloud.  Mr. Hoss read some great books to our class and we got to chat and ask questions.  We will have Principal Read Alouds once a month.  During this time, Mr. Hoss and Mr. Schunk get to spend some time with our kids and get to know them even better.  They are super storytellers and we can't wait for the next one.

Click here to see a few more pictures.

We also met Mr. Petersen's 4th Grade Students.  They will be our reading buddies this year.  We paired up and completed a Venn diagram to get to know each other.  Soon we will share our diagrams with everyone.  We will meet and read with our 4th grade buddies every Friday.  It will be tons of fun!!
