Red and Black Day

Today our children wore Red and Black (the provincial colors of Christchurch) for a donation.  Our class collected $170.50.  This money will be sent to the New Zealand Red Cross, which is one of the many organizations working tirelessly to try and help the earthquake survivors. A big thanks to all our families.  We are very fortunate to be part of this caring community.

Air and Weather - Science

During this unit, students will:
  • develop an interest in air and weather
  • experience air as a gas that takes up space and can be compressed into a smaller space
  • observe the force of air pressure pushing on objects and materials
  • observe and compare how moving air interacts with objects
  • observe, describe, and record changes that occur in weather from day to day and across seasons
  • learn that the sun warms the land, air and water
  • become familiar with instruments used by meteorologists to monitor and measure air and weather conditions
  • compare monthly seasonal weather conditions, using bar graphs
  • record and communicate data with pictures, numbers and words, and graphs
  • acquire vocabulary associated with properties of air and weather conditions

Happy Valentine's Day!

We just loved celebrating the Valentine's Day at school.  Everyone wrote cards to all the students in the classroom.  We made beautiful boxes to put our cards into.  On Valentine's Day, we sat together in groups and opened our cards and ate heart shape cookies with punch!  What a LOVELY day!

Writing Celebration - How to Books

It has been so much fun to learn about nonficiton books.  In writing, we learned how to write How-To-Books.  We thought about different things that we were experts on, then we picked one to write about.  We had to think of a few things:
  • The Title
  • What we needed
  • The steps
  • and one of the best parts, the WARNING!
The kids wrote amazing books.  They taught their friends how to draw butterflies, draw an alien, make a paper plane, make pancakes, make a peanut butter sandwich, how to throw a football and much more.  Soon they will be taking these books home.  We then chose one piece to "fancy it up".  We shared out books in our class and toasted to great ideas, clear steps, and good detailed drawings.

Happy New Year!!!

Happy New Year!!  I can't believe we are at the end of our second week of school back from the holidays.  We have been so busy.  Ms. Nora and I hope you had a wonderful holiday.

We would like to take the opportunity to introduce our two new students:

Aryaman is from India, but he was living in Vienna, Austria.  Arayaman started last week, but it seems like he has been with us since the beginning of the school year.  He is a cheerful and very friendly boy.  We are very happy to have him in our class.

Andrew is from Korea.  Today will be his first day in our class and we will let you know all about him later.

These two weeks have been super exciting.  The kids have shared their holidays with each other.  They decorated a Holiday Shirt and wrote letters to friends, family and even their stuffed animals about their adventures.

We have also started our Festival of Stories.  In our class, we have been reading books by Eve Bunting.  She has written over 100 books.  Eve Bunting is from Ireland and when she was a little girl, she loved to sit on her Dad's lap and listen to him reading her poems and telling her stories.  That's how she became this great story teller.  She has written novels, but what she likes the most is to write pictures books.  She writes fiction and nonfiction.  Every day, we read a new story.  At home, ask your child to tell you a little about one of his/her favorite Eve Bunting's story.

During this week, we have had Poetry Breaks and the B.E.A.R. has growled a couple of times.  When the BEAR growls, we drop everything and read for 10 minutes.  Do you know what B.E.A.R. stands for?  Ask your child!!

In science, we have been investigating Magnets.  We can do magic!!

Tomorrow we have our Pajama Day!  It will be so much fun.  Stay tuned for more news!!
