Happy Halloween!

What an amazing Halloween party we had today! The kids played fun games, decorated treat boxes and listened to a really cool spooky story. While they were listening to the story, they touched eyeballs, bones, brains, and skulls. Yikes!! We then had delicious treats! The classroom was beautifully decorated and we even had spooky music. We would like to thank all the parents for the wonderful party and for joining us in the fun! A big thanks to Mrs. Noel for getting it all organized! Lisa, you are great! Thank you! Ms. Nora and I hope you have a fabulous Halloween!

I would like to thank you for the wonderful gift! You and the kids sure made my birthday very special! Obrigada!!

Guidance Lesson 2- The "I" Message

Helping children to develop healthy problem solving approaches and supporting language is an ongoing process. Guidance lesson two focused on the reinforcement of the T.I.M strategy: Tell your feelings, Ignore and Move Away. In particular, we practiced using “I” messages. Please feel free to encourage the same language at home when conflict arises.

Please can you stop chasing me (child must stop the activity, have eye contact and be specific)
I feel annoyed (child must state a feeling) when you chase me and we’re not playing that game (child must re-state the problem)
I want you to play the game by the rules (child must be specific with the solution/desired behavior)

Aman's Bali holiday

I went to Bali with my friends Simran and Diya and my brother Gautam. I went swimming with my friends and went to the beach. I tried body boarding in the waves and had a great time as you can see from the photo! I ate some nice fish and yummy pizzas. I would love to go to Bali again! Aman

Jada's Wonderful Day

On Sunday, I finished all my work really fast. After that, I read a chapter book. Then, I watched T.V. for 20 minutes. After that, I had lunch and went to church. I got two candies, one was a twister, the other one was a chocolate. I went home after that. I ate dinner, read three books, took a shower, brushed my teeth and went to bed.

Investigation 2 - Spinners - Making Tops by Eva and Jada

Today we made tops. We learned that we need to use power (force) to make the top spin for a long time. First we put the disks on the shaft. We put big disks and small disks close to the bottom so it could spin properly. We also tried spreading the disks away from each other and the top spun faster. We rubbed our hands on the top of the top, pushing and pulling to make it spin. Check out some more pictures at the site below.

Fun Deepavali

This Diwali I went to my grandparents house in India to celebrate Diwali. One day before Diwali I put lights up with my grandma's maid. We also put candles around our house. We bought lots of crackers and candles to light up the house. Some of the crackers were Fullchadi, lightwheel, and rockets . We also got henna on our hands. We had neighbors who helped us with crackers. I wore an indian outfit called a lehnga. We also put fresh flowers and leaves on the gate. Diwali in India is very fun. I would like to go to India for every Diwali . How I wish Diwali was twice a year. I had a fabulous time!

Carmen, Tatum, Neen & Pops at Pulau Ubin
Neen, Pops, and Dad

When Pops and Neen (who are my grandparents) visited, we took them to the zoo. And we saw this cute cute cute cute little goat. We loved it. My sister and I wanted to buy it but it was at the zoo and my parents said no. Then we went to the water park. We had so much fun! This summer, my grandparents took me hiking and that was really fun. And before the hiking, we went camping for real. We crossed a river, and then we started a fire. It was so much fun. When it got dark, we had SPOOOOKY STORIES. After, we went to sleep in a tent in our sleeping bags. They live in Utah.

It was so much fun with Pops and Neen here!

Here is the cutest goat.

Balance and Motion - Investigation 1 - Balance

In science we started our Balance and Motion Unit. The students are first investigating Balance. During the Investigation 1, the students discovered many ways to balance two-dimensional shapes. Next they found ways to balance a pencil on its point, in stable positions. During these lessons, the students explored the concepts of balance, counterbalance, counterweight, and stability by balancing tagboard shapes, making mobiles and engaging in other balancing projects.

Check out some more pictures of our Balance Explorations on the site below.

Pumpkin Patch by Rita and Sam

We went to the Pumpkin Patch this morning. The first thing we did was we listened to a story called Piggie Pie. The witch tried to get piggies to make a piggie pie. Our favorite part of the story was when the Piggies made a plan and began to trick the witch. Then we picked a pumpkin after we took our picture. We could choose a squash or a corn or a gourd. And then we went into the black tunnel. Some people gave us some bags to put our pumpkins in. They also gave us a Halloween toy and a Halloween ring. It was very fun!
Check out the other pictures of our Pumpkin Patch visit at the site below.

Declan in Australia

In Australia, I went to a cave and saw stalactites and stalagmites. They only grow one centimeter every 1000 years! I also went on a trail ride. My horse was called Eddie. After that I went to a farm and caught guinea pigs and chickens to pet. At the beach I saw lots of big crabs. I had fun in Australia!!!

This is so COOL!

Hi first graders!

I love being able to read about your learning and your travels. Each of you is so special. I will make sure to blog about all of the great things we talk about this year.

Rita's first time snorkeling

We went to Bintan for holiday. It was so excited. I had my first time snorkeling. I wasn't scared at all. I swam with a school of fish, and saw lots of corals. It's amazing. I love the under sea world. I hope Mum can take me snorkeling again.

Fun Time at the Park

On Saturday, I went to Botanical Gardens with my family for a picnic. First, I rode my scooter with my little brother, Timothy. My older sister, Emily, was learning how to ride on her wave board and she fell a lot :)!!! Then we played soccer with the family, girls against boys. The girls lost! After, my dad and I played "Phlat" ball. I accidently threw the ball at my mom's head but she was okay.

We rested and then ate dinner. Mom made special Vietnamese sandwiches. They were yummy!!! After dinner, I rode my scooter again. I'm getting better and better everytime.

Sam's Long Weekend

Last Thursday, I spent a very fun day bike-riding with my family. My Dad rode on his big red bike and Mom had an orange and black colored bike. My bike is the same blue color as my brother Ben's. It was very fun because this is the first time we were able to ride together as a family for quite a long distance. Mom braked and used her bike to stop my Ben who was going too fast and he crashed into Mom but was not hurt. My Mom was ok too just a little bruise. The next day, we watched the movie SHORTS and I don't like it much but it was silly because all the kids were fighting over a magic stone. We saw Oscar and Noah and his Mom and Dad there too. Then we went to the SkateBoard Park at Somerset. It was too hot so we went to the Esplanade tunnel where I played tag and a new game with my brother and my Dad. Dad says we could try to push each other out of an imaginary square because we used water bottles to mark the lines. It was very fun, I won 10 out of 10. Then on Saturday I went for my violin lesson and my teacher was very happy that I could play well and hold my bow correct. He said I could practise pizzicato for this week. On Sunday, I got to paint my pottery bowls which I made last week. It was very fun and the teachers helped me to choose some colors. I get to bring my bowls home next week and best of all, Mommy says I could go back again to play with clay and make things if I want to, yeah! We had dinner at a tapas restaurant and after that I got to watch a DVD called Hookwinked.

Suhani's Diwali Weekend

This was a special weekend for me, because it was the Diwali Weekend. On Friday afternoon, my mom came home early from work. We did Rangoli in our house. In the evening, my family and I went to the West Coast Park with a few other families. We had a cool and fun evening with firecrackers, sparklers and of course, bomb bags. We ended the evening with some yummy pizza at the park.

On Saturday, my mom, my brother and I did some puja (prayers) in our home. We followed that up with another round of sparklers, bomb bags, etc.

On Sunday, I went to a Diwali party. I participated in one
dance, called "twist". Everybody shouted and whistled at the end of the song. I had a fantastic time dancing, partying with all my best friends. I was allowed to stay up past midnight!

Happy Diwali!

Fun Hong Kong

This long weekend Tess went to Hong Kong with her brother and went to see Mickey and Minnie Mouse at Disneyland. She also saw Goofy and Pluto. Goofy went right up and touched Tess on the head with his nose during the parade. Tess liked the rollercoasters and on Saturday she went to visit the Pandas and when Tess walked then the panda followed Tess. So Tess has got a new friend! Tess had a nice breakfast every morning with a plate full of strawberries. On the first day of breakfast Tess also had sausages and chicken and salmon and jammy doughnuts.

Cute Little Cuttlefish

This weekend I went diving. It wasn't just any dive, but one of the most beautiful ones. The water was clear blue and very calm. As soon as we descended, I was overwhelmed by the colors of corals and fish. We were first greeted by a huge school of jacks, and soon after that we saw it. He was hiding behind a soft coral and as we swam towards it, he changed colors and moved slowly trying to hide from us. We kept spying on it, and the tiny cuttlefish, showed its tentacles and shimmering colors to blend in with the coral. It danced with the current and we stayed there for a long time, just admiring its beauty. Then we left him alone and swam away, but we did not forget him. Here is a picture for you!

Eva's visit to the Maldives

My favorite thing I did in the Maldives was tubing & banana boating with my sisters- Lily & Claire. We saw lots of fish and different ones I haven't seen. I saw an octopus, sharks and lion fish.

Nicholas' Cambodian Adventure

This weekend I went to Cambodia and I got a drum. My brother got a violin. The best part of my trip was going on the 4-wheelers and swimming. I also liked the fish massage so much I had one every night. Nicholas

Little India Field Trip

On Friday, Oct. 9, our class went on a field trip to Little India. Our visit was during the preparations for the Deepavali Festival. Our kids had the opportunity to visit places and experience bits of one of Singaporean's cultures. They were then able to compare and contrast their families with families of other cultures and their celebrations.

First, we visited the Bazzar on Campbell Lane/Serangood Road. We looked for flower garland strands, sari stores, jewelry stores, peacock symbols, lotus flower symbols, oil lamps, and things that make sounds. While walking around, we listened to many different sounds and Indian music.

Next, we visited the Sri Veramakalimman Temple. We saw oil lamps, bells on the doors, lotus flowers on the ceiling and many other amazing things.

After that, we were very hungry and we had a snack at Komala Villas. We ate a meal of poori (fried bread), potatoes and dahl on a banana leaf.

At last we visited the Tekka Market (Wet Market). We saw meat stalls, fish stalls, curry stalls and we also tried to find the ingredients to make dahl.
After leaving Little India, we went to Fort Canning for a picnic lunch. A big thanks to all parents that chaperoned groups and joined us in Little India. We could not have done it without you!

Strengths and Goals

We hope you had an amazing long weekend! It was sure well deserved! Thank you for coming to the Parent-Teacher conferences last week. I was happy and proud to share each student's wonderful growth throughout these first couple of months in grade one. We took some time to look back at our work from the beginning of the year and compare to the work we are doing now. There was incredible growth and it's just the beginning. Together, we also came up with goals for this coming quarter. There is still so much more to learn. Way to go, First Graders!
